A new provision that would dramatically raise the penalty amounts that are issued by the Commissioner of Labor is expected to be signed by Roy Cooper. The move to increase fines for alleged violations of the North Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Act has already passed the General Assembly and will match the range of penalty levels used by federal OSHA. Dollars for penalty maximums will be almost double what they were previously.
