A 72-year-old man died yesterday after being struck by a car while crossing a highway, Garner police said. Donald Baltes and his wife were traveling west on U.S. 70 when their car broke down on the side of the road near Greenfield Parkway in Garner, said Lt. Kevan Anderson, a police spokesman. While Baltes was on the phone with roadside assistance around 7:20 p.m., he tried to find a mile marker, Anderson said. But when Baltes tried to cross the highway, he was struck and killed by a driver in a 2018 Toyota 4 Runner. The driver remained on scene and cooperated with police, Anderson said. No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing, he added.
