As North Carolina lawmakers consider whether to legalize more casinos in the state, a company called “NC Development Holdings” has asked to rezone almost 200 acres of land in Rockingham County. The developer told WNCN last week that there’s a “better than 50-50” chance a bill will pass this summer but he said there’s still no specific plan lawmakers have agreed on. Already, officials say a newly opened Virginia casino — 57 miles from Durham and 80 miles from Raleigh — is stealing away potential North Carolina gamblers. A conservative group called Greater Carolina recently found that an estimated “casino leakage to Virginia” of about $259 million annually in gross gaming revenue.
