WSIC News | Lake Norman, NC
Part-Time | Approximately 10–15 Hours Per Week
Hourly Pay Based on Experience

WSIC is looking for an energetic, knowledgeable, and community-minded Sports Show Host & Reporter to help lead our local sports coverage across radio, digital, and social media.

As Lake Norman’s radio home for the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte FC, and the NASCAR Cup Series, sports are a major part of what we do. We’re looking for someone who can expand that coverage by putting a strong emphasis on the athletes, teams, coaches, and stories shaping local high school and college athletics throughout the Lake Norman and greater Charlotte communities.

This position is ideal for someone who loves sports, is comfortable on-air and on-camera, and wants to be deeply involved in covering local athletics—from Friday night high school football and basketball rivalries to college games, athletes, coaches, and programs across the region.

What You’ll Do

On-Air Hosting

  • Host a one-hour local sports show each week on WSIC
  • Make local high school and college athletics a central focus of the weekly show
  • Develop show topics, interviews, guests, and coverage of local teams, athletes, coaches, and programs
  • Interview high school and college athletes, coaches, athletic directors, sports leaders, and other guests
  • Provide sports updates and commentary across other WSIC programming as needed
  • Cover and discuss local high school sports, area college athletics, the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte FC, NASCAR, Charlotte Hornets, Carolina Hurricanes, and other relevant sports stories
  • Be comfortable participating in both live radio and video broadcasts

Sports Reporting & Content

  • Attend local high school and college games, tournaments, practices, press conferences, and other sports-related events
  • Provide regular coverage of high school athletics throughout Lake Norman, including football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, wrestling, volleyball, lacrosse, swimming, track and field, and other sports
  • Cover college teams, athletes, coaches, and programs throughout the Charlotte region
  • Report on game results, standout performances, rankings, rivalries, championships, recruiting, and other stories of local interest
  • Conduct on-site interviews with athletes, coaches, athletic directors, parents, fans, and community members
  • Assist with coverage of professional sports throughout the Charlotte region
  • Create timely social media content from games and events
  • Produce short-form video recaps, highlights, updates, interviews, and other digital content
  • Identify compelling local sports stories and help expand WSIC’s high school, college, and professional sports coverage

Who We’re Looking For

Our ideal candidate:

  • Has a genuine passion for Lake Norman and Charlotte-area sports, especially local high school and college athletics
  • Follows local high school teams, area college programs, the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte FC, NASCAR, Charlotte Hornets, and Carolina Hurricanes
  • Understands the importance of high school and college sports to local families, schools, and communities
  • Is confident speaking live on radio and on camera
  • Has strong interviewing, writing, and storytelling skills
  • Can build relationships with athletes, coaches, athletic departments, schools, and local sports organizations
  • Understands social media and short-form video content
  • Is comfortable attending games and events, including evenings and weekends
  • Is dependable, organized, creative, and able to work independently
  • Lives in or near the Lake Norman/Charlotte area

Experience

Previous experience in sports broadcasting, journalism, radio, television, podcasting, or digital content creation is preferred, but we’re also open to emerging talent with a strong portfolio, great on-air presence, and a passion for sports media.

Experience covering high school or college athletics is a strong plus. College students and recent graduates pursuing careers in sports media, journalism, broadcasting, communications, or athletic communications are encouraged to apply.

Schedule & Compensation

  • Approximately 10–15 hours per week
  • Part-time, hourly position
  • Hourly rate based on experience
  • Schedule will vary based on the weekly show, games, interviews, and community events
  • Evening and weekend availability will be required for some high school and college game coverage
