WSIC is looking for a community-minded Freelance News Reporter to cover the people, decisions, and issues shaping Huntersville.
This role is ideal for someone interested in local journalism, government, community affairs, or media who understands the importance of keeping residents informed about what is happening in their own backyard.
Responsibilities
- Attend and report on Huntersville Board of Commissioners meetings
- Cover school board meetings and education issues affecting Huntersville families
- Monitor local government decisions, development, transportation, public safety, and other community issues
- Identify additional newsworthy stories happening throughout Huntersville
- Interview local officials, community leaders, residents, and other sources when appropriate
- Write clear, accurate, timely news stories for the WSIC website
- Create or assist with social media content related to stories
- Capture photos and short-form video when appropriate
- Meet deadlines following meetings and breaking community news
Who We’re Looking For
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Interest in local news, government, and community affairs
- Familiarity with Huntersville and the greater Lake Norman area
- Ability to remain fair, accurate, and objective when reporting
- Comfortable attending public meetings and asking questions
- Dependable and able to work independently
- Comfortable creating content for both web and social media
Previous journalism or reporting experience is preferred but not required. College students, recent graduates, aspiring journalists, and experienced community reporters are encouraged to apply.
Compensation & Schedule
This is a freelance position with pay per approved and published post. Compensation will vary based on the type and scope of the assignment.
Hours will vary depending on meetings, assignments, and local news. Evening availability will be necessary for some government and school board meetings.
