WSIC is looking for a Freelance News Reporter to help us expand our coverage of Cornelius and the issues that matter most to the community.
The reporter will serve as WSIC’s eyes and ears in Cornelius, covering local government, education, community issues, and stories residents need to know.
Responsibilities
- Attend and report on Cornelius Board of Commissioners meetings
- Cover school board meetings and education issues affecting Cornelius families
- Follow development, transportation, public safety, local government, and other community issues
- Identify newsworthy stories throughout Cornelius
- Interview officials, community leaders, residents, and other sources
- Write accurate and timely stories for the WSIC website
- Create or assist with social media coverage of local stories
- Capture photos and short-form video when appropriate
- Meet deadlines following meetings and breaking news
Who We’re Looking For
Candidates should have strong writing and communication skills, an interest in local journalism and community affairs, and familiarity with Cornelius and the Lake Norman area.
You should be comfortable attending public meetings, asking questions, working independently, and reporting stories fairly and accurately.
Previous journalism experience is preferred but not required. College students, recent graduates, aspiring journalists, and experienced reporters are encouraged to apply.
Compensation & Schedule
This is a freelance position with pay per approved and published post. Compensation will vary based on the assignment.
Hours will vary based on meetings and news coverage, with some evening availability required.
