WSIC News is expanding our local news coverage, and we’re looking for Freelance Community News Reporters dedicated to each of the communities we serve:
- Huntersville
- Cornelius
- Davidson
- Mooresville
- Troutman
- Statesville
We’re looking for people who know and care about their communities and want to help residents stay informed about the decisions, issues, and stories happening in their own backyard.
What You’ll Cover
Each reporter will primarily focus on their assigned community and will:
- Attend and report on town board, city council, commissioner, and other local government meetings
- Cover school board meetings and education issues affecting local families
- Report on development, transportation, public safety, growth, and other important community issues
- Identify additional newsworthy stories happening within your assigned town
- Interview elected officials, community leaders, residents, and other sources
- Write clear, accurate, and timely news stories for the WSIC News website
- Help create social media content related to your reporting
- Capture photos and short-form video when appropriate
- Be available for occasional breaking or developing local news stories
Who We’re Looking For
You don’t necessarily need years of professional newsroom experience. We’re looking for people who are:
- Strong writers and communicators
- Curious and comfortable asking questions
- Passionate about local news and community affairs
- Familiar with the town they would be covering
- Able to report fairly, accurately, and objectively
- Dependable and able to work independently
- Comfortable attending evening public meetings
- Interested in digital journalism and social media
Previous journalism, reporting, communications, or media experience is a plus. College students, recent graduates, aspiring journalists, experienced reporters, and strong local writers are encouraged to apply.
Compensation
This is a freelance position with pay per approved and published post. The workload will vary depending on meetings, assignments, and news happening within each community.
