The Patch is reporting that five people are dead, including an off-duty Raleigh police officer, after a shooting Thursday evening, according to the city’s mayor. A suspect was in custody as of 9:40pm, Raleigh police tweeted.
Just after 5pm, multiple people were shot on the Neuse River Greenway near the Hedingham subdivision, Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin told reporters at a press conference, a recording of which was produced by ABC11 and published by The News & Observer. Additionally, a Raleigh K-9 officer with injuries that were not life-threatening was taken to a hospital, as was another person, Baldwin said.
“This is a sad and tragic day for the city of Raleigh,” Baldwin said, calling for unity. “I just want to thank the extraordinary officers of the Raleigh Police Department who even now — right now — are protecting us and putting themselves in harm’s way to arrest the suspect.”
