High Winds in Great Smoky Mountains Close Major Thoroughfare

A high wind warning has been issued for the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee. U.S. 441 is closed as a precaution from Gatlinburg to Cherokee. The road is the major route through Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The National Weather Service said that gusts of up to 70 mph are possible, creating dangerous conditions. Winds will be stronger at higher elevations. Power outages are expected and drivers should take extra care to watch for fallen trees.
